LINCOLN Neb. – Senior Thea LaFond captured the triple jump title to highlight the Maryland track and field team's performance at the two-day Husker Invitational this weekend.
LaFond's mark of 42'00.50 gave her first place. The Maryland native also placed fifth in the long jump (19'6.50) and sixth in the 60m hurdles (8.57).
In the high jump, senior Amber Melville continued her strong campaign with a second place finish. Meville went over the bar at 5'11.25 to finish on the podium in a strong field.
Sophomore Micha Powell notched her best performance of the year with a season-best time of 56.17 in the 400m dash. Freshman Alex Leto matched Powell in the men's event with a season-best of 49.11. He and sophomore Brandon Thompson paced the Terps in the 200m, with Thompson leading the charge in 22.08 and Leto just behind in 22.30.
Senior Derek Holland gave Maryland a nice performance in the men's side of the triple jump with a mark of 48'5.25”.
In the 600m, senior Shade Pratt was the standout for the Terps, running 1:33.27 to place fourth and move herself into the No. 2 spot all-time at Maryland in the event. Sophomore Catherine Voelpel's 1:34.27 in the same event move her to fourth all-time in the Maryland record book.
Senior Myah Hicks took second in a strong collegiate field in the 800m. The 4x400m relay squad of Powell, Voelpel, Pratt and sophomore Lisa Meneau finished the Maryland weekend off strong with a season best time of 3:45.76.
Maryland returns to action Thursday at the Navy Sweetheart Invitational. The meet will serve as final preparations for the Big Ten Championships.
