Terps Defeat Michigan in Inaugural Big Ten Contest

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Matt Rambo posted his fourth hat trick of the season to lead the No. 3 Maryland men's lacrosse team to a 13-4 victory over Michigan in its inaugural Big Ten Conference contest at Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium Sunday evening.

Maryland goalkeeper Kyle Bernlohr allowed just three goals in 54:45 of action, while sophomore Isaiah Davis-Allen (2) and freshman Matt Neufeldt scored their first career collegiate goals in the win.

The Terps (8-1, 1-0 B1G) held the Wolverines (4-5, 0-1 B1G) scoreless throughout the first quarter – the second time in as my games Maryland has accomplished the feat - and jumped out to a 4-0 lead behind two goals from Rambo and one each from Connor Kelly and Davis-Allen.

The Wolverines were scoreless for the first 28:53 of the game before finding the back of the net just before halftime. The Terps went into the locker room with a 4-1 advantage.

The Terrapin offense picked up where it left off to start the second half, rattling off five straight scores to extend the lead to 9-1. The stretch was fueled by Rambo's third tally of the day to go along with goals from Davis-Allen, Jay Carlson, Joe LoCascio and Colin Heacock.

Maryland had a tremendous day at the faceoff X led by Charlie Raffa, who finished the game 11-of-14 with a team-high six groundballs. Jon Garino finished four-of-six and tacked on three groundballs.

Bernlohr, the nation's leader in goals against average and save percentage, led another stellar defensive performance finishing with six saves. Dan Morris also recorded a save in relief.

The freshman Neufeldt continued to make his presence known all over the field, causing a turnover and scooping five ground balls, in addition to his goal.

The Terps continue Big Ten play on April 4 at 3 p.m., when they welcome Penn State to Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium. The game will air live on Big Ten Network.
