Gary Williams Honored by Maryland State House

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Former Maryland men's basketball coach Gary Williams was honored by governor Larry Hogan and state representatives in recognition of Gary Williams Day Wednesday.

Williams met with Hogan in the morning at the State House before being recognized in the Senate Chamber. He was then honored in the House Chamber before taking a tour of the State House.

The legendary Maryland coach celebrates his 70th birthday Wednesday. March 4 was declared Gary Williams Day by the Maryland State Senate. Williams was elected to the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame and Naismith Memorials Basketball Hall of Fame in 2014 – the first coach ever to be inducted into both institutions in the same year.

As the Terrapins' head coach, Williams led Maryland to fourteen NCAA tournament appearances, three ACC regular-season titles, seven Sweet Sixteens, two Elite Eights, two Final Fours and the National Championship in 2002. He was the National Coach of the Year in 2002, and ACC Coach of the Year in 2002 and 2010.
