Six Run Fourth Helps Terps Blow Past Rhode Island 18-3

COLLEGE PARK, Md.—Bridget Hawvermale knocked in six runs, including a grand slam in the fourth inning, to help propel the Terps past Rhode Island, 18-3, in five innings. With the victory, the Terps move to 13-8 on the season.

Seven Terps picked up ten hits, as Skylynne Ellazarregistered her first career hit, while Hawvermale tallied her first career home run. The team registered a season-high 18 runs, as Hawvermale ended the day from the plate, going 3-for-4 with six RBIs. Shannon Bustillos went 2-for-3 with five RBIs from the plate as well.

Maryland struck early, loading the bases on two walks and a Corey Schwartz single. Mandy Gardner would walk a run in, as the ensuing batter, Hawvermale, would line a two RBI single to right. Bustillos would add an additional two-RBI single to give the Terps a 5-0 lead.

Superior defense held the Rams scoreless, as the Terps added four runs on no hits in the top of the second. An error and multiple walks helped drive the Terps runs in, extending their lead to 9-0.

In the third, Erin Pronobis hit her fourth home run of the season, a three-run blast to center, to score Hannah Dewey and Schwartz. Maryland's pitching would hold Rhode Island to no hits in the third, maintaining Maryland's 12-0 lead.

In the fourth, the Terps offense exploded, racking up six additional runs off four hits. Ellazar's single led off this inning, while a beavy of hits loaded the bases for Hawvermale. The senior's blast drove in Sarah Lang, Corey Schwartz and Hannah Dewey. In addition, Bustillos' first long ball of the season, a two-run homer to left, drove in Juli Strange.

The Rams picked up three runs on two hits in the bottom of the fifth, to end the game at 18-3.

Emma Mires also registered her first career hit.

Kaitlyn Schmeiser (10-5) picked up the win on the mound, spanning two scoreless innings and striking out one. Jay Bautista-Geiger also pitched two scoreless innings, while Brenna Nation made her season debut, pitching a two-hit, three-run final frame.

The Terps are back in action tomorrow for a double-header, as they take on Stony Brook at Noon and James Madison at 4:30 p.m. Live stats for tomorrow's games can be found HERE.
