EAST LANSING, Mich. – University of Maryland seniors Amber Melville and Thea LaFond captured individual titles on the final day of the Big Ten Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Ralph Young Field Sunday.
Melville claimed victory in the high jump, clearing 1.82m on her second attempt at the height. The senior won the high jump at the Big Ten Indoor Championship earlier this year.
LaFond's title came in the triple jump. The senior soared 13.48m on her final attempt of the competition to take the crown. LaFond's weekend also included a third-place finish in the long jump with a leap of 6.16m.
In the throws, junior Chioma Onyekwere used a toss of 16.10m to place third in the shot put. Onyekwere also took seventh in the discus.
Freshman Peyton Wade scored 4,932 in the heptathlon to finish sixth.
In the women's 400m, Micha Powell took fifth with a time of 53.75. Powell had qualified with a time of 53.69 in the prelims.
Senior Myah Hicks took sixth in the 800m final, closing strong in a time of 2:08.51.
In the men's 1500m, Jakub Zivec put forth a solid performance, crossing the line in 3:58.11 to finish fourth.
Derek Holland took eighth in the long jump with a mark of 15.24m to score team points for the Terps.
Maryland returns to action at the NCAA East Regionals in Jacksonville, Fla., on May 28.
