COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Former Terps Omar Gonzalez and Graham Zusi both earned starting nods for the Major League Soccer All-Stars Wednesday night, helping lead the squad to a 2-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur in Commerce City, Colo.
Kaka (Orlando City SC) registered a goal and an assist en route to MVP honors in front of a sold-out Dick's Sporting Goods Park. Kaka converted a penalty kick in the 20th minute and assisted David Villa on the eventual game-winner in the 23rd minute.
Gonzalez, who has also emerged as a starter for the US Men's National Team, has been named the Rookie of the Year, Defender of the Year, and has been tabbed to four MLS Best XI's (2010, 2011, 2013, 2014). The third overall pick in the 2009 MLS SuperDraft, Gonzalez has led the LA Galaxy to three MLS Cups (2011, 2012, 2014) and two Supporters Shields (2010, 2011).
After being named MLSSoccer.com's Breakout Player of the Year in 2011 with five goals and seven assists, Zusi reached new heights in 2012 earning MLS All-Star honors, a Best XI selection and was tabbed an MLS MVP finalist with five goals and an MLS-best 15 assists. Zusi followed up his 2012 campaign with six goals and eight assists and an MLS All-Star selection in 2013. He earned MLS All-Star honors for the third straight season in 2014.
Both players helped guide Maryland to the 2008 national championship.
