WASHINGTON, D.C. -Leading sports, entertainment, civic, and media celebrities gathered on Tuesday to honor and roast Maryland basketball coaching legend and Hall of Famer Gary Williams at the J.W. Marriott in downtown Washington, D.C. The celebrity roast was hosted by Michael Wilbon and James Brown. Maryland alum Chick Hernandez emceed the event.
An all-star cast served as roasters of Williams, including Keith Booth, Dave Dickerson, Chris Knoche, Tony Massenburg, Jimmy Patsos and Walt Williams. The group shared their experiences and humorous stories about Coach William's career on and off the court.
Williams capped the night with a few jabs at his crew of roasters before thanking them all for their support during his illustrious career.
“The most important people are your players and your coaches, that's your family during the season especially,” Williams said. “You rely on them. I'm not sure if players realize how much coaches rely on them to support the coach and the assistant coaches, and yeah I yelled and did all that stuff, but it was a situation where I really cared, I wanted them to be successful.”
The event benefited DC College Access Program – a a non-profit organization working in partnership with the District of Columbia school system that provides counseling and financial assistance to students who might otherwise never have the opportunity to attend or graduate from college. DC-CAP provides individual and group counseling, financial aid assistance, scholarship programs, parent education, college application assistance and college student support.
