COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Big Ten Conference hosted it annual media day for the first time in Washington, D.C., Thursday afternoon. Maryland head coach Mark Turgeon, junior guard Melo Trimble and senior center Damonte Dodd represented the Terps, who enter their third year in the Big Ten.

Turgeon expressed sincere appreciation to Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany for hosting the media and having the conference championship in Washington D.C. in March.

“We are excited about having media day here and excited about having the tournament in Washington D.C.,” Turgeon said. “Jim Delany told me when we entered the league that it would be a priority to having the conference championship here.”

Turgeon, who led the team to the Sweet 16 for the first time in 13 seasons, started practice last week with a team that features eight newcomers. Entering his sixth season with the Terps, Turgeon will rely on Trimble, who was named preseason All-Big Ten.

“I think, first of all, Melo's had an unbelievable first two years for us,” Turgeon said. “I thought his sophomore year was exceptional, too, and he doubled his assists and still scored at a high level. So he is at great peace.”

Dodd, who is anticipated to start at center, has started 45 games during his Maryland career.

“I've been impressed with how Damonte's matured over the last four years,” Turgeon said. “He is an outstanding rebounder and rim protector and he is someone we will rely on for leadership on and off the court.”

Turgeon, Trimble and Dodd spent the day interviewing with local and national media. Maryland will return to practice tomorrow and host Maryland Madness Friday night at 8 p.m. at XFINITY Center.
