Track Office Dedicated to Alumnus Albert Carey

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Former University of Maryland track & field athlete and longtime supporter Albert (Al) Carey spent the afternoon on campus Thursday, as the head track and field coaches' office at the XFINITY Center was dedicated in his name.

Carey had the opportunity to meet with student-athletes from the cross country and track and field programs, while a plaque was placed outside the office of current head coach Andrew Valmon in recognition of his support of the program.

“Al has been such an important part of our program since I got to Maryland, and I'm honored to have our head coaches' office dedicated in his name,” said Valmon. “We're so thankful for all he's done; he truly embodies what it means to be a Terp. It was just great to have him here spending the day with our team.”

Al was a five-year member of the Maryland track and field team, competing as a distance runner for some of the most dominant squads in Terps' history. Carey helped UMD capture its 19th consecutive ACC title in 1974, before graduating with a degree in government and politics.

Carey is the chief executive officer of North America for PepsiCo. He is a 35-year PepsiCo veteran, well known for his passion for customers and leadership throughout his career.

Al is a member of the Board of Directors of The Home Depot, Inc. In addition, he is a Board of Trustees member at the University of Maryland, and a Dean's Advisory Council member at the Robert H. Smith School of Business.

He and his wife Vickie have four children and reside in Connecticut.
