COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The No. 1 Maryland men's soccer team dropped Ohio State 2-0 Friday night at Ludwig Field to stay unbeaten in 2016.
Gordon Wild and Sebastian Elney both scored first-half goals for the Terps (9-0-2, 5-0-1 B1G). Maryland is now outscoring opponents 28-7 this season. It was the Terps' fourth consecutive shutout and sixth straight victory.
Wild netted his league-leading 10th goal of the year in the 13th minute. After Jake Rozhansky dished to Elney from the far sideline, Elney flicked the ball behind his back to a streaking Wild who finished from eight yards for the early 1-0 lead.
Elney took the scoring into his own hands for Maryland's second goal. After the ball bounced around in the box, Eryk Williamson punched the ball out to Elney who finished from 18 yards off the pipe for his second goal of the year.
“It was another great night at Ludwig,” head coach Sasho Cirovski said. “I was really happy with our first half. To get another shutout is something to be really proud of. I thought the movement in the first half was excellent and I thought this was the best Sebastian and Gordon have looked together.
“We were a little unlucky to not get another goal. We came out in the second half a little bit on the protective side and that's not the way we need to come out in the second half but I thought we managed the game and weathered the storm. Cody (Niedermeier) made a couple of good saves but we looked a little fatigued from Monday night. Nonetheless I'm really proud of a great night for the team and we're ready to move on to West Virginia on Monday.”
The Terps celebrated their first-ever Maryland United Night, in conjunction with former Terp standout Robbie Rogers and National Coming Out Day Oct. 11.
Maryland travels to West Virginia for a 7 p.m. match on Monday.
