COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Maryland's Student Athlete Advisory Committee brought a little value to the spare change many overlook, holding the first-ever “Penny Wars” to benefit Terp Thon this past week. The SAAC raised over $1,300 to benefit Terp Thon, the Miracle Network Dance Marathon at the University of Maryland that supports the Children's National Health System.

“The response has been really good,” said women's volleyball player and Terp Thon athletics ambassador Hailey Murray. “People have gotten really into it. And the best part is we've teamed up with miracle kid, so if you look on the front of the jars there's a picture and story of the child you're helping. So each team has someone they're playing for and that they can keep in mind.”

The idea was for student-athletes, coaches and staff to donate loose change (or more) to jars coinciding with each athletics team at Maryland in the lobby of the Academic Center at the XFINITY Center. The field hockey team was declared the winner after accumulating the largest donation.

Terp Thon is the Dance Marathon organization at the University of Maryland that fundraises all year For The Kids at Children's National Health System. Their yearlong efforts culminate in a 12-hour Dance Marathon, where students stand for 12 hours For The Kids at Children's National. Miracle Network Dance Marathon is a nationwide movement where students gathering as one generation fighting for the next.

This year's Terp Thon will be held from noon-midnight March 4-5 in College Park. For more information or to make a donation, click here.
