Box Score 2 TEMPE, Az.- Sophomores Skylynne Ellazar and Destiney Henderson went a combined 6-10 at the plate to lead the Maryland softball team to a double header split on opening day at the Kajikawa Classic.
The Terrapins opened up the season with a 9-1 loss to Boston College before responding with a 9-4 win over Boise State.
“Our program grew a lot today,” said head coach Julie Wright. “After a rough start, I was pleased with our tenacity in the win against Boise State. Hannah executed her pitches and threw a great game. Sky has been working very hard on her swing and it showed with her first career home run. It was a gorgeous swing and we were all thrilled for her.”
Game One
Hannah Dewey went 2-3 from the plate with a RBI single as the Terps dropped the first contest of 2016, 9-1 in 6 innings to Boston College.
The Temecula, Calif. native made the most of her trip back west. Dewey's first hit of the contest tied the game at one with a single in the third inning, scoring Lindsey Schmeiser after an illegal pitch scored the first Eagle run.
Boston College immediately responded with four runs in the bottom half of the third on five straight two out hits. The Eagles added on one in the fourth and fifth and ended the game with a two-run home run in the fifth inning.
Game Two
After falling behind 2-0 early, Skylynne Ellazar went 3-3 with her first career home run to push Maryland to a 9-4 win over Boise State.
Maryland totaled 12 hits, including six by Ellazar and Henderson and scored in every inning after the first to score nine runs
Boise State jumped on top in the top of the first with two runs. Ellazar made her first impact of the game with a perfect bunt single right in front of the catcher that caused an arrant Bronco throw to score the first Maryland run.
The Terrapins then put a three spot up in the third and fourth as Hannah Dewey, Kristina Dillard, Lindsey Schmeiser, and Corey Schwartz knocked in six runs to make the score 7-2.
In the fifth inning, Ellazar crushed a ball to dead right field for her first career home run to give Maryland an 8-2 lead. After a two run Boise State home run, Maryland scored one more in the sixth with Corey Schwartz's third RBI of the outing, once again bringing in Schmeiser.
Hannah Dewey earned the win in the circle, going six innings, while allowing three earned runs and striking out four. Brenna Nation closed the first Terrapin win of the season out with a scoreless seventh.
The Terps are back in action tomorrow at the Kajikawa Classic for a doubleheader against No. 6 Oregon and San Diego. The bout with Oregon is scheduled for an 11:30 a.m. (EST) first pitch with the game against San Diego to follow at 2:00 p.m.
