Box Score TEMPE, Az.- Kristina Dillard smacked two singles as Maryland dropped the Kajikawa Classic finale to Utah State 5-0.
“Today we showed the team we don't want to be,” said head coach Julie Wright. “Today was a game you put in the memory bank while you prepare all week. Then you cut it loose when you take the field again.”
A miscommunication in the Maryland infield plated the first Aggie run of the day in the top of the first.
With the Maryland bats silent, Brenna Nation would keep the Terps in it. Making her third start of the weekend, Nation went 5.1 innings, allowing four earned runs, and striking out six. The redshirt junior was a workhorse for the Terrapins this weekend, pitching 19 innings.
Utah State added four runs in the sixth off of four hits and one Maryland error to take a 5-0 lead.
Maryland threatened in the sixth with singles by Lindsey Schmeiser and Corey Schwartz but couldn't push a run through. The Aggies closed it out in the seventh.
This morning's loss gives the Terrapins a 2-3 record after the first weekend of the season. Maryland recorded wins against Boise State and San Diego while faltering to Boston College, No. 6 Oregon, and Utah State.
Next weekend, the Terrapins will travel to Atlanta, Ga. for the Georgia State Tournament. Maryland will face No. 5 Alabama twice, Georgia State, Miami (OH), and Mercer.
