Box Score 2 COLLEGE PARK, Md.- The Maryland softball team opened up their 18 game 2016 home slate with a pair of losses on Friday. The Terrapins were defeated by Massachusetts 5-4 and North Dakota State 10-1.
Skylynne Ellazar reached base in five of her seven at bats on Friday. Ellazar cracked a double and scored two runs over the course of the two games.
GAME ONE
Maryland built a 4-0 lead through five innings off a strong outing by Hannah Dewey. But a late inning rally by the Massachusetts Minutewomen put up five runs over the final two innings to defeat the Terrapins 5-4.
The Terrapins and Minutewomen were hitless through two innings as both starting pitchers began strong. After escaping trouble in the third inning, Maryland would jump on top in the bottom half as a Hannah Dewey RBI single brought home Skylynne Ellazar to give the Terps a 1-0 lead.
Kylie Datil did it all in the fourth to add two more to the scoreboard for Maryland. After a Corey Schwartz walk, Datil crushed a RBI triple and then forced an arrant Massachusetts throw to score herself.
In the fifth inning, Maryland scored for the third straight inning with help from two Minutewomen errors. Sarah Calta singled, Hannah Dewey reached on an error, and Kristina Dillard brought Calta in. Through five innings, it was 4-0 Terrapins.
Massachusetts brought the bats out in the sixth, scoring two runs on three hits off Dewey. Facing a 4-2 deficit going into the final frame, two Maryland errors and two UMass hits scored three runs for the Minutewomen. Maryland couldn't put together a rally in the bottom and dropped its home opener.
Hannah Dewey threw all seven innings, allowing three earned runs.
GAME TWO
North Dakota State scored two runs in every inning but the third to defeat the Terrapins 10-1 in six innings.
The top of the Bison order went a combined 9-13 to propel the reigning Summit League champions to ten runs over six innings.
Maryland got its lone run in the bottom of the fifth off a Hannah Dewey RBI double to score Skylynne Ellazar. Dewey now has accumulated 22 RBI's in this young season. She leads the Terps in that category.
Day two of the Maryland Invitational tomorrow will feature another Terrapin doubleheader at the Maryland Softball Stadium. The Terps will take on Boston University at 6:00 p.m. and Ball State at 8:15 p.m.
