Kelly Leads Terps Past Tar Heels, 11-8

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The No. 6 Maryland men's lacrosse team defeated No. 12 North Carolina 11-8 on Saturday afternoon at Capital One Field at Maryland Stadium behind a career-high six points from sophomore midfielder Connor Kelly and four goals from junior Matt Rambo.

After an early Tar Heel goal, Kelly buried back-to-back goals in less than a minute to give Maryland a lead they held on to for the remainder of the contest. Kelly would be involved in each of the Terps' first five goals.

The Terps took a 6-4 lead into halftime behind junior midfielder Colin Heacock's team-leading 15th goal of the season followed by tallies from senior midfielder Bryan Cole, Kelly and Rambo. Rambo now has 84 career goals for the Terps, passing Brian Willard (1984-87) for 21st on the all-time list.

Maryland was able to control the tempo of the game paced by Austin Henningsen's play at the faceoff X. The freshman specialist controlled 10-of-19 draws during the contest.

The Terrapins used a three-goal run spanning the third and fourth quarters behind two goals from Rambo and one from junior attackman Dylan Maltz to build an 11-6 lead with 1:45 remaining in the game. The Tar Heels were able to add two late goals in the final minute.

Senior goalie Kyle Bernlohr helped keep a potent Carolina offense at bay with nine saves on the afternoon. Redshirt senior defender Greg Danseglio scooped up four groundballs and forced two turnovers.

Maryland returns to action when they travel to Penn on Tuesday, March 29 for a 4 p.m. tilt.
