ROSEMONT, Ill. – Melo Trimble, Diamond Stone, Robert Carter, Jake Layman and Rasheed Sulaimon all represented the Maryland men's basketball team on the All-Big Ten Conference list, announced on Monday night.
Trimble earned second team honors, Stone landed on the third team and the trio of Carter, Layman and Sulaimon all garnered honorable mention recognition. Stone was also tagged to the All-Freshman Team. It is the first time the Terps have placed five players on an all-conference team since the 2001-02 national championship squad.
Trimble, who was named to the national ballot for the Wooden Award on Saturday, leads the Terps in scoring (14.4 ppg), assists (159), free throw percentage (.861) and steals (42). The sophomore guard was second in the B1G in free throw percentage, fifth in assists, tied for fourth in steals and 16th in scoring. The Upper Marlboro, Md., native scored 20 or more points eight times, including B1G games vs. Michigan State, Wisconsin, Ohio State, Northwestern and Nebraska
Stone ranks third all-time in Maryland history for blocks for a freshman in a single season (50). He has scored in double figures in 14 of 17 league contests, averaging 13.7 points per game. The center from Milwaukee, Wisc., established a Maryland freshman record and all-time mark at XFINITY Center with 39 points vs. Penn State (12/30). He ranks third in blocks (2.0 bpg) and sixth in field goal percentage (.556) in B1G play.
Carter has scored in double-figures in 23 of 31 games and averaged 12.5 points per game in B1G action. The junior forward is eighth in the B1G in rebounds (6.8 rpg) and sixth in field goal percentage (.561) during league play. The Thomasville, Ga., native led the team in rebounding in 15 games, scoring in seven and blocks in 11. He recorded double-doubles at Wisconsin (1/9) and vs. Northwestern (1/19) in B1G play as Maryland is only one of two teams in the nation to have all five starters post double-doubles.
Layman is one of just 28 players in school history to record 1,000 points (1,329) and 500 rebounds (638). The Wrentham, Mass., is seventh all-time at Maryland in games played (136). The senior forward recorded double figures in 10 of 18 league contests, averaging 11.1 points and 5.4 rebounds per game.
Sulaimon scored in double figures 16 games and notched five or more assists on nine occasions. He posted 15 or more points in eight league contests. The senior guard from Houston, Texas, is sixth in the Big Ten in three-point field goal percentage (44.1). One of the league's top defensive players, Sulaimon boasted 32 steals as Maryland ranked first in three point field goal percentage defense and second in scoring defense and FG percentage defense in Big Ten play.
Maryland – the third seed in the upcoming Big Ten Tournament – will play in the quarterfinals on Friday at 9 p.m. in Indianapolis.
