Women's Lacrosse Maryland Athletics

#1 Terps Dominate Rutgers, 18-3

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Led by four goals from sophomore attacker Megan Whittle, the No. 1 Maryland women's lacrosse team (12-0, 2-0 B1G) dominated Rutgers (3-10, 0-2), 18-3, Saturday evening.
 
“We started a little slow, but I think we were able to start our offense and making better shots and capitalizing on them,” head coach Cathy Reese said.
 
Freshman attacker Caroline Steele finished with three goals and one assist while junior midfielder Zoe Stukenberg also had a hat trick. Senior midfielders Bryn Boucher and Taylor Cummings each notched three two goals and one assist each. Sophomore midfielder Taylor Hensh scored twice while sophomore midfielder Kacie Longo and junior attacker Theo Kwas each scored once.
 
After going scoreless for the first seven minutes of the game, Whittle found the back of the net on a free-position shot at 22:48. Stukenberg, Steele and Boucher all scored within 43 seconds of each other to force a Rutgers timeout at 20:00.
 
Steele scored her second of the night at 17:44 and Cummings scored her 200th career goal at 17:91 to push the Maryland lead to 6-0. Steele completed her hat trick at 15:08 and Whittle scored again less than a minute later.
 
Stukenberg scored on an 8-meter at 13:56 to push the lead to 9-0 before Rutgers notched a goal at 12:55. Whittle and Boucher finished off the second-half scoring while the Scarlet Knights were able to add another goal as the Terps took an 11-2 lead at halftime.
 
Stukenberg started the second-half scoring off a backdoor assist from Steele at 27:42. Wannen found Cummings at 25:06 to increase the lead to 13-2.
 
Whittle scored a man-up goal at 20:38 and Hensh scored back-to-back goals as the Terps lead 15-2. Kwas scored on a free-position shot at 10:43 and Longo finished a bouncing shot at 1:47 as Maryland won, 18-3.
 
Cummings tied her career high with 13 draw controls as the Terps held a 16-7 advantage in draws.
 
Freshman goalie Megan Taylor made six saves and allowed two goals in 39:30 in cage. In relief, sophomore Emma Moss made one save while allowing one goal.
 
The Terps return to the Garden State next Wednesday when Maryland faces Princeton at 7 p.m.
