Terps Face Penn State In Big Ten Clash

COLLEGE PARK, Md.- After their best week of the season, the Maryland softball team looks to keep its momentum going in a road series at Penn State this weekend. 

Maryland is coming off a 3-2 week at the Maryland Softball Stadium. The Terrapins split with Saint Francis, before winning a conference series over Michigan State. Maryland dropped the first game before sweeping a Sunday doubleheader to win the series. 

This weekend on the diamond

Maryland will make its first trip up to Happy Valley in eight years, as the Terrapins and Nittany Lions will face off for a three-game set. 

The two will bout on Friday at 6:00 p.m., Saturday at 4:00 p.m., and Sunday at 1:00 p.m.

All three games will take place at Beard Field at the Nittany Lion Softball Park, which is located at Nittany Lion Softball, University Park, PA 16802.

Last time out

  • Maryland won its first Big Ten series of 2016 last weekend against Michigan State. After dropping game one on Friday night, the Terrapins took both games of a Sunday doubleheader by way of 19 runs on 24 hits.
  • Earlier that week, Maryland split a midweek douleheader with St. Francis. The Terrapins won the first game 6-3 before faltering in the nightcap, 7-3. Skylynne Ellazar went 4-7 in the double-dip.
  • Skylynne Ellazar had a stellar week, going 8-13 with six runs and five RBIs. The sophomore had all three RBIs in Friday's affair and was 2-3 with two runs and two RBIs in the day-cap on Sunday.
  • Brenna Nation recorded all three Terrapin wins in the circle. The redshirt junior pitched 16 innings to a 3.50 ERA and threw her first career seven inning complete game against Saint Francis.

quick hits

  • On the season, the Terps are hitting .290 with a .367 on base percentage and a .404 slugging percentage. Maryland has cracked 287 hits, scored 153 runs, knocked 47 doubles, and totaled 400 bases.
  • Skylynne Ellazar has been a force from the plate all season. Through 38 games, the Hawaii native is batting a team leading .414 by way of 42 hits and 24 runs. Ellazar ranks fifth in the Big Ten in hits and batting average.
  • Hannah Dewey and Kristina Dillard have also produced in the lineup. The two juniors have a combined 73 hits, 21 extra-base hits, and are top two on the team in RBIs with 50.

ScOUTING Penn state

  • Penn State enters this weekend right above .500 with a 21-17 record. However, the Lions are 8-3 in Big Ten play after sweeping Rutgers and Michigan State and taking two of three from Indiana. The fourth place team dropped a doubleheader to Ohio State as well.
  • The Nittany Lions produce at the plate, they are second in the Big Ten with a .323 batting average. They lead the Big Ten in hits, are second in doubles, and third in total bases.
  • Remarkably, six players are hitting over .350 for Penn State. Macy Jones leads the way, hitting at a .395 clip. Jones leads the team in practically every offensive category.
  • Marlaina Laubach is the leader in the circle, holding a 2.72 ERA. Laubach has appeared in 30 games and has thrown eight complete games, with 73 strikeouts.
  • Amanda Lehotak is in her third season at the helm of the Penn State softball program. Lehotak comes from UTSA and Jacksonville where she spent a combined eight years as head coach.

Series history

  • The Terps and Nittany Lions have met fifteen times, with Penn State holding a 10-5 advantage.
  • Last season, Maryland swept Penn State in College Park but fell to the Lions in the 8-9 matchup of the Big Ten Tournament.
  • Lindsey Schmeiser was 7-13 (.538) against Penn State last season with a pair of doubles and home runs. Hannah Dewey was one hit behind her at 6-13 (.462).
  • Maryland and Penn State have four mutual opponents this season in Florida Atlantic, Georgetown, Ohio State, and Michigan State. The Nittany Lions are 4-3 against these opponents while Maryland is 3-5.

Sky's the Limit

  • Skylynne Ellazar has been nothing short of sensational from the plate this season.
  • The Hawaii native leads the Terps in batting average, hits, runs, and doubles. Ellazar also ranks in the top ten in the Big Ten in all three of those categories, and is fifth in batting average and hits.
  • Right now, Ellazar also holds the best career batting average in Maryland softball history at .391.
  • Over the past 23 games, Ellazar leads the team with a .444 batting average.

Legendary Lindsey

  • In her senior season, Lindsey Schmeiser has put together quite the Terrapin career.
  • Schmeiser has earned numerous accolades during her Terrapin career, including 2013 ACC Freshman of the Year, First-Team All ACC, First-Team Big Ten, and Big Ten Player of the Week (3/16/15).
  • The week of February 20th might've been Schmeiser's most successful yet. On Sunday Feb 21, Lindsey broke the school home run record. On Monday Feb 22 she was named a 2016 Senior CLASS Award candidate. To cap it off, on Tuesday Feb 23 she was named the Solomon Eye Terp of the Week.
  • The Dunkirk, Md. native is climbing atop the all-time ranks in numerous categories. Schmeiser is fourth in Maryland softball batting average ranks (.336), has the most home runs (31), and runs (131) in Maryland softball history and is eight doubles (38) away from breaking the school doubles record, held by Lindsey Klein and Shannon Bustillos.
  • Last season, Schmeiser broke the single-season double record (21) and had a 23 game hitting streak. In her freshman year, Schmeiser had the most RBIs (59) in a single season ever.

Dillard Dart

  • Junior Captain, Kristina Dillard has made quite an impact in her first season wearing Maryland colors.
  • The Hanover, Md. native ranks first in the Big Ten with eleven runners caught stealing. 
  • Beyond making an impact behind the dish, Dillard has done damage at the dish as well. The junior is batting .314 by way of 38 hits and seven doubles.

looking ahead

  • Maryland will play five games next week, including three on the Big Ten Network. The Terrapins host 1-95 rival Rutgers for a Wednesday doubleheader, to be aired live nationally on BTN, before making a trip to #2 Michigan for a weekend series.
