COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The No. 5 Maryland men's lacrosse team claimed sole possession of first place in the Big Ten Conference Saturday evening as it defeated No. 18 Rutgers, 11-8, on a career-high four goals from Dylan Maltz.
The Terps (9-2, 3-0) found themselves trailing, 6-3, with 12:05 remaining in the third quarter before the offense caught fire, exploding for a seven-goal run and securing a lead they would never surrender. The win marked Maryland's eighth consecutive victory.
The run, paced entirely by the starting attack unit, saw Maltz net three of his four goals on the day, while Colin Heacock and Matt Rambo each scored two of their three tallies, giving the Terps a 10-6 lead with 7:27 remaining in the contest.
Rutgers (9-3, 2-1) would find the net twice more in the final frame while Heacock capped the scoring for Maryland.
The Scarlet Knights opened up the scoring on the day, but senior midfielder Pat Young would respond with a fantastic individual effort to get Maryland on the board. Rambo and Maltz would tally first half scores before Rutgers used a four-goal run of their own to jump to a three-goal lead.
Senior goalie Kyle Bernlohr stood tall between the pipes making eight saves and holding the Rutgers offense scoreless for a span of 20:40 in the second half. Redshirt senior defenseman Greg Danseglio and junior defenseman Tim Muller each scooped up five ground balls. Muller also added two caused turnovers for the Terrapin defense.
Sophomore faceoff specialist Will Bonaparte was superb at the faceoff X controlling 15-of-23 draws and adding six groundballs. He won 10-of-14 draws in the second half.
The Terps return to action on Tuesday, April 19 when they welcome in-state rival Navy to College Park for a 7 p.m. contest on Big Ten Network.
