Penn State Defeats Maryland In Series Finale

Box Score

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.- The Maryland softball team totaled ten hits, including a 3-for-3 showing from Kristina Dillard, but surrendered two sixth inning runs to drop the series finale to Penn State, 5-3.

With today's 3-for-3 performance, Dillard finished the weekend up in Pennsylvania 8-for-10 with two doubles and four RBIs.

Penn State scored right off the bat in the first inning, using three hits and a Maryland error to take an early 3-0 lead.

The Terps cut the Lion lead to two in the third. Jordan Aughinbaugh led off with a single, Sarah Calta followed up with a single of her own. Then, with two outs, Dillard smacked a RBI single to put Maryland on the board.

The tandem of Brenna Nation and Madison Martin held Penn State in check throughout the game. Each of the redshirt juniors threw three innings. Nation allowed two earned runs, Martin one. Both recorded one strikeout.

Lindsey Schmeiser led off the fifth inning with a single. The senior promptly scored on a RBI double by Skylynne Ellazar that just stayed fair down the first base line. After Dillard was intentionally walked, Hannah Dewey tied the game up with a RBI groundout to second.

With the game tied up, Maryland primed to take the lead in the sixth. Emily Libero and Destiney Henderson both singled and Sarah Lang bunted them over. With the go-ahead run on third, the top two batters in the Terrapin order grounded out to keep the run from scoring.

In the bottom of the sixth, Penn State loaded the bases with no outs off two walks and a Maryland error. Megan Good leashed a two run single to give Penn State a 5-3 lead, in what would be the final scoring play of the game.

Dillard singled again in the seventh but the Terps couldn't score her and fell 5-3.

Maryland will be back in action on Wednesday for a Big Ten doubleheader against Rutgers. The twin-bill will begin at 3:00 p.m. at the Maryland Softball Stadium, and will be broadcasted on the Big Ten Network.
