Box Score 2 COLLEGE PARK, Md.- The Maryland softball team dropped a pair of games to Rutgers on Wednesday, 4-0 and 6-3.
Skylynne Ellazar was 3-for-6 with a walk on the day to lead the Terps from the plate.
GAME ONE
Brenna Nation threw a complete game, only allowing one run and striking out three, but the Terrapin bats went silent as Rutgers won 4-0.
After scoreless sides each way through the first two innings, Rutgers used a Maryland defensive miscue to score two in the third. Following a Stephanie Huang single, the Terrapin infield threw a bunt away, allowing Huang to score from first and move up the batter to third. That batter would score on a one out sacrifice fly for the second Scarlet Knights run.
Rutgers added another unearned run in the sixth, and their fourth run in the seventh off a pinch-hit Allie Yoffee home run, for a total of four.
Skylynne Ellazar had two of the four Maryland hits, while juniors Kylie Datil and Sarah Calta had the other two.
GAME TWO
Lindsey Schmeiser blasted her 32nd career home run in the fifth inning in a 9-6 loss to Rutgers in the nightcap.
Like in game one, Maryland got an effective start in the circle, this time out of Madison Martin. The Edmond, Okla. native went six innings, allowing three earned runs on seven hits. Hannah Dewey pitched a scoreless inning in relief as well.
Sierra Maddox hit Rutgers' second homer of the day to start the scoring in the second inning.
The Terrapins tied it up in the third. Corey Schwartz led off with a walk before Sarah Calta and Skylynne Ellazar singled. With the bases loaded, Kristina Dillard lofted a sacrifice fly into right to even the score at one.
Rutgers immediately retook the lead in the fourth however, with aggressive base running. The Scarlet Knights scored two on first and third opportunities, sending the runner on third home after a Maryland throw to second. The third Scarlet Knights run was scored on a Jordan Whitley single. Midway through the nightcap, Rutgers led 4-1.
Maryland got back within one in the fifth with help from the senior duo of Corey Schwartz and Lindsey Schmeiser. Schwartz singled to center, and on a 0-1 pitch, Schmeiser sent a long-ball, her fifth of the season, to left field to cut the deficit to one.
The Scarlet Knights added two insurance runs in the seventh to make it 6-3 and Maryland couldn't answer in the bottom half.
Maryland will be back in action in less than 48 hours as the Terps begin a series in Ann Arbor against #2 Michigan. This game can be seen on the Big Ten Network at 6:00 p.m.
