Box Score COLLEGE PARK, Md.- Skylynne Ellazar cracked a go-ahead grand slam in the fifth inning to lead Maryland to a season ending win over Indiana, 10-8.
Ellazar's grand slam was just a part of her 3-for-3, five RBI day. The Kahului, Hawaii native also cracked a RBI double in the second inning. The sophomore ended the season with a .399 batting average, the best on the team and the third best mark in Maryland softball history.
The Terrapins honored the careers of four-year starters, Lindsey Schmeiser and Corey Schwartz before the game. Schmeiser went 2-for-4 on her senior day with a RBI double. Schwartz reached base via walk, and added a sacrifice bunt.
Brenna Nation started her 28th game of the season, and threw a complete game for the Terrapins. The redshirt junior silenced the Hoosiers through the first two innings.
A Lindsey Schmeiser senior day single was all the Terrapins could get in the first inning.
Maryland had one of the best innings of the season in the second. The bats unleashed: plating six runs on five hits and four doubles.
Jordan Aughinbaugh walked and Destiney Henderson reached on a sacrifice bunt error. Then, the offensive barrage began. Kylie Datil brought Aughinbaugh and Henderson in with a two run double to the right field fence, Schmeiser cracked a double to bring in Datil, Ellazar followed with a RBI double of her own, before Dillard hit the fourth RBI double of the inning. That wasn't all, as Sarah Lang would bring in the sixth run of the inning on a RBI single.
Facing a 6-0 deficit, Indiana rallied for five in the third and one in the fourth. Five of those six runs were unearned as two costly errors harmed the Terrapins.
Ellazar and Dillard singled in the fourth but the Terps could not score them.
The Terps jumped on top for a lead they would never relinquish in the fifth. Maryland loaded the bases with no outs, as Henderson and Datil singled, and Schwartz walked. After the next two Terps went down, Ellazar hit a grand slam to the right center field scoreboard to give Maryland a 10-6 lead.
Indiana got two back in the seventh, but couldn't get any more as Maryland held on for a 10-8 win.
