Terps Announce 2016-17 Non-Conference Schedule

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Maryland men's basketball team announced its 2016-17 non-conference schedule Thursday. The slate features home tilts against Pittsburgh and Oklahoma State in addition to a road test at Georgetown and a trip to the Barclay's Classic in Brooklyn.

“We are excited about having a challenging nonconference schedule that features high quality programs and will prepare us for Big Ten play,” said head coach Mark Turgeon, who is entering his sixth season at the helm of the Maryland program. “We will face experienced teams with veteran rosters, which will benefit our young squad.”

Maryland begins competition with an exhibition on Nov. 5 against Catawba College before welcoming local foe American University on Nov. 11 in the Terps' home opener at XFINITY.

The rivalry resumes on Nov. 15 as the Terps make the short trip to Washington, D.C., for a battle with Georgetown at the Verizon Center in the second annual Gavitt Games. The Terps topped the Hoyas, 75-71, in the first meeting between the two storied programs in 42 years last season at XFINITY Center. Maryland leads Georgetown in the all-time series, 37-27. The Terps and the Hoyas played each other every season from 1947 to 1976.

After a midweek matchup with St. Mary's College of Maryland on Nov. 17, Maryland takes on Towson in another game with local flavor on Nov. 20 at XFINITY. The Terps are 12-0 all-time against Towson – which finished with a 20-13 overall record a year ago - but have not played the Tigers since the 1996-97 campaign.

The Terps will welcome Stony Brook on Nov. 22. The Seawolves won a program-record 26 games a year ago and made their first appearance in the NCAA Tournament before bowing out to Kentucky in the first round. The 2016-17 campaign will be the first under new head coach Jeff Boals, who previously served as an assistant at Ohio State for seven seasons.

Maryland will make another trip to the Big Apple when it competes in the Barclays Classic on Nov. 25 and 26 in Brooklyn. The Terps will face Richmond on Friday while Boston College and Kansas State will square off on the other side of the bracket. The winners and losers of each game will battle in the championship and consolation on Saturday. It will mark the third time that the Terps will play at the Barclays Center (vs. Kentucky - Nov. 9, 2012 and vs. UConn - Nov. 8, 2013). The Terps defeated UConn, 76-66, in the Jimmy V Classic last December at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

The Terps are 25-15 all-time against Richmond, and won the last meeting, 66-50, on March 12, 1982 in the National Invitational Tournament at Madison Square Garden.

Maryland returns to the friendly confines of the XFINITY Center when it welcomes Pittsburgh for the Big Ten/ACC Challenge on Nov. 29. Maryland is tied for the third-most wins all-time in the Challenge, collecting 10 victories since its inception in 1999. Maryland and Pitt have met nine previous times, with the Terps owning a 5-4 edge in the all-time series. The Terps last met the Panthers on Jan. 25, 2014 in an 83-79 loss at XFINITY Center – the lone season both programs were members of the ACC.

The Terps remain in College Park for the next four contests including games against Big 12 power Oklahoma State (Dec. 3), Howard (Dec. 7), Saint Peter's (Dec. 10) and Jacksonville State (Dec. 12). Maryland topped Oklahoma State, 73-64, in Stillwater on Dec. 20, 2014 and leads the all-time series, 2-0. Rising juniors Melo Trimble and Jared Nickens combined for 27 points in the key road victory. Turgeon began his head coaching career at Jacksonville State in 1998 and spent two seasons with the Gamecocks.

Maryland will return to Royal Farms Arena in Baltimore for a second consecutive season as it caps its non-conference schedule with a matchup with Charlotte on Dec. 20. The Terps defeated Princeton, 82-61, in front of more than 11,000 fans last December. The Terps are 10-2 all-time in the Charm City, including a streak of six consecutive wins. Maryland is 3-0 all-time against Charlotte, with its last win coming on Jan. 3, 2009 in College Park, 85-75.

Maryland finished the 2015-16 season ranked No. 18 in the Associated Press and No. 12 in the USA Today/ESPN Coaches poll with a 27-9 overall record, marking the first time in program history the Terps have put together back-to-back 27-plus win seasons. Maryland also advanced to the Sweet Sixteen for the first time since 2003.

Game times and television broadcast designations will be announced at a later date.

Season tickets will go on sale on July 6.  Prices start as low as $349.  Season tickets can be ordered online at umterps.com or by calling 800-462-TERP.
