Maryland Has Strong Showing at Nittany Lion Challenge

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Maryland track and field team produced four event winners in its second meet of the indoor season Saturday, with the squad claiming victories in the 200m dash, 400m dash, 4x400 relay and high jump at the Nittany Lion Challenge. Several Terps reset personal-best marks, in addition to host of top-five finishes as the team matched up with athletes from Villanova, Cornell, Bucknell, Pittsburgh, Georgetown, host Penn State and others.    

Senior Micha Powell set a new personal best in the 200 meter dash en route to an event victory, winning the race with a time of 24.40. The mark moves Powell up one spot into fifth on the Maryland all-time list. Juniors Chandler Baxter and Kayla Richardson also posted a top-10 finishes for Maryland, taking fifth (25.25) and eighth (25.58) respectively.

Maryland was the top team in the field in the men's 400 meter dash, producing the first, second and fourth place finishers. Junior Alex Leto won the event with a career indoor-best time of 48.48, while senior teammate Dahri Jahn-Richardson also set a new career indoor best to take second in 48.50. Freshman Kameron Jones wasn't far behind with a mark of 49.20 to finish fourth.

The women's 4x400 relay squad capped off the meet with a victory for Maryland, as Meneau, Voelpel, Alexander and Powell combined to go 3:41.47 to edge the field. The women's DMR also ran a solid race, with Squirini, Cooper, Huggins and Lucki combining to finish second in 11:37.01.

Freshman Dallyssa Huggins won her first career collegiate event in the high jump, clearing 1.70 meters to top the field. Junior Peyton Wade also cleared 1.70 meters to make it a 1-2 finish for the Terps in the event.

Sophomore Hazem Miawad broke the school record in the 600 meter run, posting a time of 1:20.75. The mark was two hundredths of a second faster than Shawn David's school record of 1:20.96 set back in 2012 at the Terrapin Invitational, and good for fifth in the field.

Junior Alexandra Lucki reset her indoor career-best in the 1000, finishing second overall with a time of 2:46.67. The mark was nearly four seconds faster than her previous career-best of 2:50.08 set last season, and she is now approaching Rosalind Taylor's school record of 2:44.82 set back at the 1987 NCAA Championships.

Sophomore Thaila Cooper had a solid showing in the 400 meter run, claiming second place with a time of 58.62 – just three hundredths of a second off the leader.

The Terps had two PRs in the 60 meter hurdles, as senior Lisa Meneau (8.47) and Peyton Wade (8.67) went 2-3 in the finals. The time moves Meneau into third all-time on the Maryland indoor list, while Wade also cracks the top-10 with her mark.

Senior Sydney Almeida was the top Terp in the 3000 meter run, crossing the line in 10:06.47 to place 11th in the field. Freshman Kathryn Gearhart was right behind her, finishing 13th in 10:10.81.

Senior Tom Hogarty, junior Patrick Hanley and sophomore Aaron Barlev went 5-6-7 in the 3000, finishing in 8:32.44, 8:34.37 and 8:40.63 respectively.

Junior Gaston Assoua placed second in the high jump, leaping 7.19 meters just .01 meters behind the leader. On the women's side, the Terps went 3-4 in the long jump, led by a third place finish from Peyton Wade (5.63m) while Jewel Smith was fourth (5.53m). Freshman Leah Blackall led the way for Maryland in the triple jump with a fourth place finish (11.75m).

Junior Claudia Ababio posted two top-five finishes in the shot put and weight throw, taking third in the shot with a distance of 14.57 meters and fourth in the weight throw with a mark of 17.95 meters.     

Maryland will now turn its attention it's annual home meet of the indoor season, with the team hosting the Terrapin Invitational at the Prince George's Sports and Learning Complex in Landover, Md.
