EAST LANSING, Mich. – Sophomore Anthony Cowan Jr. finished one point short of his career high with a game high 26 points, but it was not enough as Maryland fell to top-ranked Michigan State 91-61 Thursday evening. Maryland moves to 13-4 and 2-2 in the Big Ten with the loss.
Maryland came out of the gate firing, trading blows early with the nation's No. 1 ranked team early. Sophomore Kevin Huerter scored 14 points in the opening half to pace the Terps, who played to a 27-27 tie with the hosts at the 7:04 mark in the opening half.
The Spartans (15-1, 3-0 Big Ten) went on a 15-0 run late in the first half to take control and led 44-32 at halftime. They refused to be content with the 12-point lead, building 30-plus point cushions in the second half by diving for loose balls, playing tough defense and finishing with a season-high 16 3-pointers.
The Terrapins finished 13-15 from the free throw line, with Cowan Jr. hitting all seven of his attempts. It was Cowan's fifth game of the season with at least 20 points. Â
The Terps will return to action Sunday when the team hosts Iowa at the XFINITY Center at 8:00 pm.
