IOWA CITY, Iowa  – The second-ranked Maryland field hockey team won at No. 8 Iowa, 2-1, Sunday afternoon at the Hawkeyes' Grant Field. Sophomore
Brooke DeBerdine's first goal of the year and a second half score by junior
Madison Maguire proved to be the difference.
Â
The Terrapins have five victories over top 10 opponents and 10 of their 15 wins have been against top 25 teams.
"I would really like to applaud Iowa," head coach Missy Meharg said. "They played with a ton of energy. I believe this is our only game we got out-shot and out-cornered, so we will look at that. We got great depth today. Lizzy Dessoye, Julie Duncan and Taylor Mason played very well for us."
The two teams stayed locked in a scoreless battle through the first 33 minutes of the match. Senior goalkeeper
Sarah Holliday made three saves to preserve the scoreless tie. DeBerdine put the Terps on the board when she buried a shot off a pass from freshman
Taylor Mason with 1:57 left in the first half.
Â
The Hawkeyes tied it up in the second half off their seventh penalty corner in the match. Ellie Holley scored and Maddie Murphy notched an assist with 23:21 to play.
Â
Just 2:56 later, senior tri-captain
Linnea Gonzales sent a hard shot right on the money into the circle and Maguire deflected it in for the score. Maryland took a 2-1 lead with 20:25 to go.
Â
Holliday finished with four saves on the day. The Terrapins took five shots to the Hawkeyes' eight. Maryland had two penalty corners and Iowa had eight.
Â
Maryland (15-1, 6-1 B1G) and No. 7 Michigan (10-5, 6-1) sit atop the Big Ten standings. The Terrapins beat the Wolverines, 2-1, in College Park on Sept. 23.
