COLUMBUS, Ohio – Freshman Emily McNesby netted her first career goal in the 39th minute as Maryland (4-8-5, 2-5-3 B1G) secured a 1-1 double overtime draw at Ohio State (7-5-3, 4-2-3) Sunday. The game marked the eighth overtime contest of season for the Terrapins, as the team enters the final stretch of the regular season next week with games left against Michigan and Indiana.
After a scoreless opening round of play, McNesby broke through for the Terps right before halftime. A deep pass from Niven Hegeman reached the feet of Jarena Harmon in the right side of the 6-yard box, and the senior worked around a pair of Buckeye defenders to find McNesby.
The Chalfont, Pa. native converted on the wide-open look, scoring into the left side of the cage to put her team ahead 1-0. UMD would take the lead into halftime, but the hosts managed to draw even four minutes into the second on a free kick goal from Izzy Rodriguez.
From there the Terps would clamp down on defense, as Ohio State garnered only a handful of legitimate scoring threats throughout the remainder of regulation and overtime. Goallkeeper Rachel Egyed did her part between the poles, making four saves through the final 60-plus minutes to keep Maryland even.
The Terps will need to win out in their final games against the Wolverines and Hoosiers and get some help from around the league in order to clinch a spot in the conference playoffs. Maryland will first travel to Michigan for a 7:00 pm kickoff on Thursday, October 18.
