THIS WEEKEND'S STORYLINES
Senior running back
Ty Johnson now stands fourth-all time in Maryland lore in both career rushing yards and career all-purpose yards, jumping to both spots this past weekend against Rutgers with 132 rushing yards and 146 all-purpose yards. Johnson is only 10 yards behind former Maryland WR Stefon Diggs for third all-time in all-purpose yards with 4,106.
Junior safety Darnell Savage Jr. has posted four interceptions this season, which is tied with seven other players for the most in the country. Savage Jr. had two interceptions last week against Rutgers and one against No. 15 Michigan and Temple.
The Terrapins are currently fifth in the country and lead the Big Ten in turnover margin, at +1.5 per game, after recording five interceptions this past weekend against Rutgers. Maryland has won or tied the turnover battle in every game but one this season and has three times (Texas, Minnesota, Rutgers) had a turnover margin of three or greater.
Senior linebacker Tre Watson leads the Big Ten and ranks eighth in the country in solo tackles/g (6.5). The fifth-year transfer from Illinois was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week following his performance against Minnesota, when he totaled a game-high 11 tackles, including a sack, and returned an interception 36 yards for a touchdown. He has posted at least 10 tackles in each of the last four games.
Through six games, Maryland has recorded 12 interceptions, the second highest total in the country, trailing only North Texas with 13. The Terps have picked off at least one pass in every game this season, including five this past weekend against Rutgers, the Terps most in a game since they totaled seven picks against Duke on November 14, 1988.
