COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Indiana's Grace Geise scored the lone goal of the game in the 38th minute as the Hoosiers held off a furious second half effort from Maryland to clinch a 1-0 win Sunday afternoon. The Terrapins conclude their 2018 campaign with a 4-10-5 mark and 2-7-2 record in Big Ten play.
Indiana took advantage of the wind at their backs in the first half, keeping the Terps pinned in their own end while creating chances. The Hoosiers' early attempts didn't challenge goalkeeper Rachel Egyed much, until Geise found an opening at the top of the 18 with under seven minutes to play. She finished her shot into the bottom right corner, and the Terps headed into the locker room down a goal.
Maryland reversed their fortunes playing with the wind in the second half, outshooting the visitors 10-7 in the final 45 minutes. The Terps pressured Indiana early on, and looked like they nearly had the equalizer off a corner kick in the 65th minute.
After Anissa Mose played in a ball from the left wing, Darby Moore got a hold of the ball in the six yard box and nearly had it into the left corner. However, an Indiana defender was there to parry the ball away and the Terps were left scoreless. Â
Maryland got three shots in succession in the 71st minute, starting with consecutive strikes inisde the 18 from Emily McNesby and Alyssa Poarch, but they were blocked. McNesby then took another attempt on goal, but it was saved to keep the Terps behind by one.
Hope Lewandoski also produced a near goal in the 77th minute, ripping a shot from the right side directed at the top left corner. The ball went just high, ricocheting off the top left corner as the Hoosiers again escaped.
UMD continued to press and moved players into the top of the formation as time wound down, but Indiana held on to secure the win.
The Terps will return a strong core of players in 2019, as head coach Ray Leone and his staff embark on their fourth season at Maryland. Â
