COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland football team will welcome Michigan State to College Park on Saturday, November 3 for the team's annual blackout game. The Terps and Spartans will face off at Capital One Field at Maryland Stadium at 12:00 p.m. with the game set to broadcast on ESPN2.
THIS WEEKEND'S STORYLINES
1. Sophomore running back Javon Leake became the first ever player in Big Ten history to win both the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week and Special Teams Player of the Week in the same week after his performance against Illinois. Leake totaled four touchdowns (three rushing, one kickoff) and 274 all-purpose yards in this past weekends game, the first Terp with four touchdowns in a game since DJ Adams reached the end zone four times in the 2010 Military Bowl.
2. Senior running back Ty Johnson now stands third-all time in Maryland lore in career all-purpose yards with 4,140, jumping from fourth to third against Iowa, passing WR Stefon Diggs (2012-14), with 59 all-purpose yards. Johnson currently ranks fourth in career rushing yards with 2,597 and stands 374 yards behind Steve Atkins (1975-78) for third all-time.
3. Through eight games, Maryland has recorded 14 interceptions, the highest total in the country, tying Fresno State and LSU who also have 14. The Terps are the only team in the Big Ten with at least one interception in every game this season including five a few weeks back against Rutgers, the Terps most in a game since they totaled seven picks against Duke on November 14, 1988. Both senior linebacker Tre Watson and junior safety Darnell Savage, Jr. have posted four interceptions this season, which is tied with eight other players for the third most in the country.
4. With a senior running back Ty Johnson 98-yard kickoff return touchdown at #15 Michigan on October 6 and a 97-yard kickoff return touchdown by sophomore running back Javon Leake this past weekend against Illinois, Maryland is the only team in the FBS with two kickoff return touchdowns of over 95 yards and also the only team in the FBS that has two different players who have recorded a kickoff return touchdown.
5. This past weekend against Illinois, Maryland racked up 712 yards on offense (431 rushing, 281 passing). The 712 yards are the most the Terps have accumulated in a single game since at least 1982 and the most by any team in a Big Ten game since Michigan had 751 yards of offense (248 rushing, 503 passing) against Indiana on Oct. 12, 2013.
