Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Terps and Hoyas Play to Scoreless Draw

WASHINGTON, D.C. — A hard-fought contest between two local rivals ended without a goal as the Maryland men's soccer team drew with Georgetown, 0-0, on a hot afternoon at Shaw Field Monday.

The Terrapins (4-4-3, 2-2-0 Big Ten) and Hoyas battled over the course of 120 minutes and combined for 35 total shots. Maryland's center back pairing of juniors Donovan Pines and Johannes Bergmann were sensational in front of keeper Dayne St. Clair, who made seven saves,

"I think it was a fair result," Maryland head coach Sasho Cirovski said. "I was pleased with how hard our guys competed today for the full 110 minutes. Our defensive effort was outstanding. The conditions made for a game that wasn't a usual crispy Maryland/Georgetown encounter. It was a bit of a survival game."

The first half was an even one with both teams finding a couple of chances. In the 16th minute, senior Amar Sejdic found a shot just outside the box, but his left-footed attempt was saved. In the 33rd minute, freshman Justin Gielen received a ball over the top and attempt a shot that was saved. The ball bounced out to Sejdic who struck a deflected shot before another shot that was saved.

The 63rd minute saw Sejdic hit another shot from the top of the box. The ball pin-balled off two Georgetown defenders before just flashing wide. Gielen was on the end of a decent counter in the 74th minute, but his header went wide.

In the 78th minute, some good combination play from Matt Di Rosa and Eric Matzelevich on the left results in a teasing Di Rosa cross that just missed the path of Sebastian Elney in the middle.

St. Clair was solid throughout and made a huge save with three minutes left, denying a shot that was destined for the corner. Georgetown's Ethen Lochner had the best chance of the overtime shooting a close range shot over the crossbar.

Bergmann and Pines were immense in the middle throughout. Maryland also got good efforts from defensive midfielder Andrew Samuels, along with freshman Brett St. Martin off the bench.

Maryland returns to action Friday night at Indiana. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m., and fans can watch the action live on BTN Plus.
