ROSEMONT, Ill. – Forward Jalen Smith has been named Big Ten Freshman of the Week after leading the Maryland men's basketball team to a pair of victories to open the 2018-19 season.

Smith averaged 15.0 points, 9.0 rebounds and 1.5 blocks in 25.0 minutes of action in the wins against Delaware and Navy. 

Smith is the first Maryland player to claim conference freshman of the week honors in the opening week of the season since Exree Hipp in 1992.

The Baltimore, Md., native burst onto the scene in his collegiate debut, notching 19 points and 13 rebounds against Delaware. Smith was the first Terrapin to post a double-double in a collegiate debut since Buck Williams in 1978. He then had 11 points and five rebounds against Navy.

Smith was named a McDonald's All-American after a sensational career at Mount Saint Joseph, and was ranked the 15th overall player in the class by ESPN.

Smith and the Terps return to action tonight when they face North Carolina A&T at 7 pm in College Park. The game will air on ESPNU.
