THIS WEEKEND'S STORYLINES
1. Freshman kicker Joseph Petrino is the only kicker in the country to remain perfect on field goal attempts, converting on all 10 of his attempts this season. This past weekend, Petrino hit all four of his field goal attempts, the first Maryland kicker to record four field goals since Nick Ferrara vs. Miami on September 5, 2011.Â
2. Through 10 games, Maryland has recorded 17 interceptions, the highest total in the country. The Terps are the only team in the Big Ten and one of just three FBS teams with at least one interception in every game this season including five a few weeks back against Rutgers, the Terps most in a game since they totaled seven picks against Duke in 1988. Senior LB Tre Watson is second in the country and leads the Big Ten with five interceptions and junior S Darnell Savage Jr. is right behind him with four, the third most in the country. Watson picked off his fifth pass this past weekend, tying Karl Edwards ('87) for the most all-time by a Terrapin linebacker.Â
3. With a senior running back Ty Johnson 98-yard kickoff return touchdown at #15 Michigan on October 6 and a 97-yard kickoff return touchdown by sophomore running back Javon Leake against Illinois, Maryland is the only team in the FBS with two kickoff return touchdowns of over 95 yards and also the only team in the FBS that has two different players who have recorded a kickoff return touchdown.
4. Redshirt freshman running back Anthony McFarland rewrote the Maryland record book this past weekend with a 210 yard rushing game. McFarland's 210 yards were the most ever in a game by a Terrapin freshman running back. In addition, McFarland became the first Maryland running back to have three 100-yard games in a single season and broke the all-time rushing yards mark for a freshman, now standing with 724 on the season.Â
5. Against Illinois, Maryland racked up 712 yards on offense (431 rushing, 281 passing). The 712 yards are the most the Terps have accumulated in a single game since at least 1982 and the most by any team in a Big Ten game since Michigan had 751 yards of offense (248 rushing, 503 passing) against Indiana on Oct. 12, 2013.Â
