Anthony McFarland Jr. and a trio of Maryland offensive linemen garnered All-Big Ten accolades Wednesday as the league announced its offensive honorees.
McFarland was named Second Team All-Big Ten by the media and third team all-league by the coaches. Senior tackle
Damian Prince was selected Third Team All-Big Ten by the media, while senior tackle
Derwin Gray and senior center
Brendan Moore each earned Honorable Mention All-Big Ten (coaches & media) accolades.
Maryland boasts 12 All-Big Ten selections in 2018, the programs most as a member of the Big Ten and most overall since 13 Terps were named All-ACC in 2003.
McFarland is Maryland's first freshman to garner second team all-conference honors since Darrius Heyward-Bey in 2006. He also joins Purdue's Rondale Moore as the only freshman to make first or second team all-league.
McFarland finished his record-breaking freshman campaign with 1,034 rushing yards and four touchdowns. He set Maryland freshman records for most rushing yards in a game (298 vs. Ohio State) and most rushing yards in a season. His 1,034 rushing yards ranks as the ninth most in a season in program history.
McFarland averaged 7.89 yards per carry, ranking as the fifth best mark in the country. A two-time Big Ten Freshman of the Week honoree, McFarland is the first Maryland player to post consecutive 200-yard rushing games since 1979 and is the first freshman in program history to record four 100-yard games in a season.
Prince, Gray and Moore anchored a Maryland offensive line that helped the Terps rush for 230.2 yards per game, which ranks third in the Big Ten and tied for 18
th nationally.
Maryland rushed for over 300 yards in a game five times and over 400 yards twice. The Terps rushed for at least 290 yards in five of nine Big Ten games.
