COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland football team will head to Bloomington for a matchup with Indiana this weekend. The Terps, playing their fourth road game of the season, will take on the Hoosiers at noon on Saturday. The game will broadcast live on the Big Ten Network.
THIS WEEKEND'S STORYLINES
1. Senior running back
Ty Johnson now stands third-all time in Maryland lore in career all-purpose yards with 4,140, jumping from fourth to third against Iowa, passing WR Stefon Diggs (2012-14), with 59 all-purpose yards. Johnson currently ranks fourth in career rushing yards with 2,597 and stands 374 yards behind Steve Atkins (1975-78) for third all-time.
2. Maryland currently has the best turnover differential in the Big Ten, as the Terps have caused nine more turnovers than they've given up. The Terps have caused 18 turnovers (16 interceptions, two fumbles) on defense and given the ball up nine times on offense. At +1 per game, Maryland has the ninth best turnover margin in the country.
3. Through eight games, Maryland has recorded 16 interceptions, the highest total in the country. The Terps are the only team in the Big Ten and one of just three FBS teams with at least one interception in every game this season including five a few weeks back against Rutgers, the Terps most in a game since they totaled seven picks against Duke in 1988. Both senior LB Tre Watson and junior S Darnell Savage Jr. have posted four interceptions this season, which is tied with nine other players for the third most in the country. This past week against Michigan State, both senior defensive back Ravon Davis and senior defensive lineman Byron Cowart notched interceptions.
4. With a senior running back Ty Johnson 98-yard kickoff return touchdown at #15 Michigan on October 6 and a 97-yard kickoff return touchdown by sophomore running back Javon Leake against Illinois, Maryland is the only team in the FBS with two kickoff return touchdowns of over 95 yards and also the only team in the FBS that has two different players who have recorded a kickoff return touchdown.
5. Against Illinois, Maryland racked up 712 yards on offense (431 rushing, 281 passing). The 712 yards are the most the Terps have accumulated in a single game since at least 1982 and the most by any team in a Big Ten game since Michigan had 751 yards of offense (248 rushing, 503 passing) against Indiana on Oct. 12, 2013.
