Terps and Indiana Clash in Big Ten Semifinals

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Maryland men's soccer team has won four of five matches and after taking out fourth-seeded Michigan State, will face top-seeded Indiana in the Big Ten Semifinals at Grand Park in Westfield, Ind., on Friday at 1 p.m. on BTN.

Storylines
  • The Terps boosted its NCAA Tournament credentials after Eric Matzelevich's 98th minute winner pushed the Terps past Michigan State in overtime of the Big Ten Quarterfinals. The Terps boast the No. 12 RPI in the country and fifth-ranked strength of schedule. Maryland's lowest rated non-conference opponent in the RPI is Coastal Carolina in No. 35.
  • After Matzelevich's goal on Sunday, Maryland now has three overtime game winners this year with Paul Bin's 107th minute goal vs. Penn State and William James Herve's 95th minute goal at Northwestern being the others. The Terps have played in eight overtime games and have a 3-2-3 record.

Senior Amar Sejdic and junior Donovan Pines earned first-team plaudits while William James Herve was a unanimous selecton to the all-freshman team. Sejidc is now one of three players in Maryland's short history in the Big Ten to earn first-team honors twice (Chris Odoi-Atsem/Mael Corboz) while Pines, after earned all-freshman honors as a freshman and second-team honors as a sophomore is one of just three Terps to be selected to an All-Big Team team in three seasons (Odoi-Atesem/Eryk Williamson).
  • An imposing figure at 6'5, Donovan Pines scored his first career headed goal against Ohio State. Pines added the goal to what has been an outstanding season that has seen him transform into one of the top centerbacks in the country.
  • Herve has been a revelation for the Terps since arriving from Paris before the season. The freshman has three goals and two assists and he was named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week after his two goal performance in Maryland's come-from behind win over Northwestern on Sept. 14. He has been named to Top Drawer Soccer's national team of the week twice this season.
  • Maryland defeated Penn State, 3-2, on Paul Bin's double overtime winner. Bin has now scored in his last three of his last four apperances, also tallying against Denver and Indiana. Maryland's 15 goals in Big Ten play are the most in the conference.
  • The Terps stormed to a 5-0 victory against Ohio State, notching its highest total of goals and largest margin of victory this season. Amar Sejdic (2), Sebastian Elney, Donovan Pines and Mike Heitzmann tallied the goals. The Terps last 5-0 win came on April 29, 2016 against Hartford.
  • In that match with Ohio State, Chase Gasper notched three assists, tying a Maryland program record held by eight other players. The feat was most recently accomplished by Stephen King on Nov. 3, 2007 against Virginia.
  • Maryland's had significant success since entering the Big Ten in the conference tournament, winning three straight (2014, 2015, 2016) and notching am 8-1-2 recor.d Senior Sebastian Elney has three Big Ten Tournament goals (vs. Wisconsin/2017, vs. Wisconsin/2016, vs. Michigan/2015) while senior DJ Reeves (vs. Michigan/2016, vs. Wisconsin/2016) and senior Amar Sejdic (vs. Michigan State/2016, vs. Michigan/2015) have two. Elney is the only player in the Big Ten this season to have scored in the last three conference tournaments.
  • Maryland has won five of nine available trophies since joining to the conference prior to the 2014 season. The Terps were in position to win the Big Ten regular season title last season before falling to Michigan in overtime in the regular season finale.

Honoring the Past
  • The Maryland men's soccer program honored the 50th anniversary of its first-ever national championship by welcoming back members of the 1968 title winning squad to Friday night's match against Michigan State. The team was recognized on the field prior to the Terrapins' nationally televised match with the Spartans. Maryland and Michigan State shared that 1968 national title after the two teams played to a 2-2 draw and were named co-champions.
  • Maryland's 1968 season was one of the finest seasons in program history. The Terrapins were the lone undefeated team in college soccer that year, finishing with a 14-0-1 record, and captured their 16th consecutive ACC title. The squad is one of three Maryland teams to finish the entire season unbeaten (1947, 1958).
