COLLEGE PARK, Md. -Â Maryland will hit the road for the first time this season Friday, November 9 when the Terps travel to Annapolis, Md. to face the United States Naval Academy at the 2018 Veterans Classic. The game will tip at 8:30 pm and will be broadcast on CBS Sports Network.Â
STORYLINES
•  Maryland will resume one of its longest all-time series against the Midshipmen, which dates back to the 1924-25 season. Maryland holds a 30-27 edge in the series, and has won 11 straight meetings.Â
•  The last time the two teams met on March 17, 1985, Maryland secured a 64-59 win over the Mids in the Second Round of the 1985 NCAA Tournament. The game pitted Maryland legend Len Bias up against Navy's star David Robinson, with both players scoring over 20 points (Bias – 20, Robinson – 22).Â
•  Freshman Jalen Smith had 19 points and 13 rebounds in his college debut, Bruno Fernando and Anthony Cowan Jr. each scored 15 and Maryland opened its 100th season with a 73-67 win over Delaware in its season opener on November 6.Â
•  Smith's double-double performance in his Maryland debut put him in elite company for a Maryland freshman. Smith became the first Terrapin freshman to record a double-double in his debut since Buck Williams posted 10 points and 13 rebounds against Bucknell on November 24, 1978 in UMD's season opener.Â
•  Additionally, Smith's 19 points were the most by a freshman in his Maryland debut since Joe Smith scored 26 in the Terps' season opener against Georgetown on November 26, 1993.  Â
•  The Terrapins return three starters from a season ago in junior Anthony Cowan Jr., sophomore Bruno Fernando and sophomore Darryl Morsell. Cowan was named a Third Team All-Big Ten selection while also being named to the All-B1G Defensive Team. Fernando garnered All-Freshmen Team honors, while Morsell averaged 8.7 points and 4.4 rebounds during his freshmen season.  Â
•  Maryland was on the cusp of a top-25 preseason ranking in the Associated Press Poll, finishing with 28 votes. Four of Maryland's 2018-19 opponents (Virginia, Michigan State, Michigan and Purdue) were tabbed as preseason top-25 teams in the poll released on October 22.Â
