#11 Terps and #2 Indiana Clash In College Cup Semifinals

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The No. 15 Maryland men's soccer team, seeded 11th in the NCAA Tournament, has advanced to the 14th College Cup in program history and will take on second-seeded Indiana in the national semifinals Friday night at 10:30 on ESPNU. The Terps are 7-1-1 after starting the season 4-5-3 and have not given up a goal in the last 320 minutes of play.

Storylines
  • Maryland advanced to the College Cup after a 1-0 win at Kentucky in the quarterfinals. Maryland's backline shutdown the nation's No. 5 scoring offense and overcame a Wildcat team that was 12-0 (32 goals for/2 goals against) heading into the match. The Terps are in their first College Cup since 2013 and ninth under head coach Sasho Cirovski
  • Maryland advanced to the Elite Eight with a 2-0 victory over former ACC rival Duke on the road. The Terps have made it to the quarterfinals in 10 of the last 17 years.
Maryland's last quarterfinal win had come in 2013 when they defeated California on the road, 3-1.
  • The Terrapins have now advanced to the postseason in 18 consecutive years and are making their 38th NCAA Tournament appearance in school history. The Terps are 57-30-8 all-time in the NCAA Tournament and 6-5-1 in their 13 national semifinals. Maryland has won three national championships (1968, 2005, 2008). Senior Chase Gasper is the lone Maryland player to have played in a College Cup as he appeared in the 2014 edition as a freshman at UCLA.
  • Indiana leads the all-time series between the two sides 4-2-7. The two teams have met twice this season with Indiana winning 2-1 in Bloomington and the teams drawing in the Big Ten Semifinals 1-1. The Hooisers defeated the Terps in a penalty shootout to advance.
  • Boosted by a No. 12 RPI and No. 2 strength of schedule, the Terps earned a national seed after missing out on a seed and first round bye last season. Maryland played 12 matches in the regular season against teams that made the NCAA Tournament.
  • Maryland has been incredibly efficient in its three NCAA Tournament matches. All three of the Terps opening goals have come on their first shot on goal.
  • Redshirt junior Dayne St. Clair notched a career-high eight saves against Duke. He is sixth in the country in shutouts (11), which is a single season career high. St. Clair's shutout total and current goals against mark of .715 is the best for a Maryland keeper since current MLS keeper Zac MacMath (15/.64) in 2010. Maryland's 16 goals against is the best mark through 21 matches since 2010.
  • After Eric Matzelevich's game winner against Michigan State in the Big Ten Quarterfinals, Maryland now has three overtime game winners this year with Paul Bin's 107th minute goal vs. Penn State and William James Herve's 95th minute goal at Northwestern being the others. The Terps have played in eight overtime games and have a 3-2-4 record.
  • Maryland put three players on the United Soccer Coaches All-North Region Team. Junior defender Donovan Pines (First Team), Amar Sejdic (Second Team) and Dayne St. Clair (Third Team) earned that honor. It is Sejdic's second all-region honor of his career.
  • The Terps placed three players on the All-Big Ten teams. Sejdic and Pines earned first-team plaudits while William James Herve was a unanimous selecton to the all-freshman team. Sejdic is now one of three players in Maryland's short history in the Big Ten to earn first-team honors twice (Chris Odoi-Atsem/Mael Corboz) while Pines, after earned all-freshman honors as a freshman and second-team honors as a sophomore is one of just three Terps to be selected to an All-Big Team team in three seasons (Odoi-Atsem/Eryk Williamson).
  • In Maryland's match against Ohio State, Chase Gasper notched three assists, tying a Maryland program record held by eight other players. The feat was most recently accomplished by Stephen King on Nov. 3, 2007 against Virginia. Maryland is 17-3-4 when Gasper is in the lineup over the past two seasons and just 4-8-1 without him.
  • Maryland and Indiana have played in the national semifinals once before: a 3-2 double overtime victory for the Hoosiers in 2004. Future pro stars Jason Garey and Maurice Edu both scored for Maryland in that match.
Honoring the Past
  • The Maryland men's soccer program honored the 50th anniversary of its first-ever national championship by welcoming back members of the 1968 title winning squad to Friday night's match against Michigan State. The team was recognized on the field prior to the Terrapins' nationally televised match with the Spartans. Maryland and Michigan State shared that 1968 national title after the two teams played to a 2-2 draw and were named co-champions.
  • Maryland's 1968 season was one of the finest seasons in program history. The Terrapins were the lone undefeated team in college soccer that year, finishing with a 14-0-1 record, and captured their 16th consecutive ACC title. The squad is one of three Maryland teams to finish the entire season unbeaten (1947, 1958).
