WASHINGTON, D.C. - Rising junior guard
Anthony Cowan Jr. averaged 28.3 points per game in an outstanding weekend in the Kenner League at the McDonough Gymnasium on the campus of Georgetown University.
Â
Cowan, a Third Team All-Big Ten performer, played for the McClinton All-Stars and led his team to a 3-0 record this past weekend. The Bowie, Md. native, who posted games of 27, 31 and 27 points respectively, led the league in scoring for the second straight year. Included in Cowan's strong performances,
was a game winning floater as time expired to lead his team to an 85-84 victory on Saturday.
"My coach just put the ball in my hand," said Cowan. "He said just go downhill with a ball screen and finish the play."
Â
Cowan has worked tirelessly this offseason and has added five additional pounds of muscle to his frame through his training with Director of Basketball Performance
Kyle Tarp. He has also added weekly yoga sessions since the start of summer. Cowan said that he did yoga while at St. Johns College High School and elected to continue it this summer.
Â
"I feel like I've gotten bigger and stronger. It's helped me with my game by allowing me to open up my hips and stretch different parts of my body. Most importantly, it's been good for my mental state. It has helped me relax and stay in the present."
Â
Cowan said that his performance at the Kenner League will certainly be a big confidence builder.
Â
"This weekend allowed me to work on different things to get ready for the year. I feel like I'm a different finisher around the basket."
Â
The team's leading scorer in the 2017-18 season, Cowan likes what he sees from his new teammates on the 2018-19 squad who he has been able to work out with and spend time with this summer. As an upperclassman, Cowan is looking forward to having a leadership and mentor role.
Â
"I want to continue to be a good leader and teammate. I remember being in their position not too long ago. Â Everything moves a lot faster, I just want to help them anyway I can on and off the court."
