HARRISONBURG, Va. – Senior Jarena Harmon scored two goals, including the game winner in the 87th minute, to push Maryland (1-0) to a 2-1 victory over William & Mary (0-1) in their season opener on Thursday. It was the second straight season-opening win for the Terps, who have extended their non-conference unbeaten streak to eight games over the past two years.
Harmon started off her senior campaign with a bang, putting the Terps ahead under five minutes into the opening game of the Fairfield Inn by Marriott JMU Invitational. Harmon took a ball over the top from sophomore Hope Lewandoski, volleying a ball past the keeper in traffic to put the Terps ahead at the 4:54 mark.
The Tribe answered right back, as Courtney Miles found the back of the net at 6:54 to even the game at one. Both teams would produce chances throughout the first half, but headed into the locker room tied.
It was more of the same in the better half of the second half, with neither team able to find the go-ahead goal as time ticked down. Harmon would come through for the Terps in the closing minutes, collecting a rebound off a shot from freshman Alyssa Poarch to put away the game-winner into an open net.
Harmon has already surpassed her goals total from last season one game into her 2018 campaign, scoring on both of her attempts on the day. Head coach Ray Leone featured three freshmen in his starting lineup in Loren Sefcik, Madison Oracion and Adalee Broadbent, while five Terps made their collegiate debuts in the victory.
Maryland will return to action Sunday to face host James Madison (0-1) at 2:00 pm.
