Maryland Topped by JMU Sunday

HARRISONBURG, Va. – The Maryland women's soccer team dropped its first game of its 2018 campaign Sunday, dropping a 3-0 decision to host James Madison at the Fairfield Inn by Marriott JMU Invitational. The Terps wrap up opening weekend with a 1-1 record, after topping William & Mary 2-1 in their season opener on August 16.

Maryland controlled possession early in the game at Sentara Park, producing a pair of corner kicks and scoring opportunities in the opening minutes. Neither team could find the net until the 41st minute, when JMU's Abby Maltese tapped in a cross from the left side of the box. Despite an edge in shots and corners, the Terps headed to the locker room down 1-0 after the first half.

James Madison continued to press in the second half, and broke through for its second goal in the 54th minute. Another cross into the box made way for a goal for Haley Crawford, as the Terps found themselves down two with 35 minutes to play.

Maryland strung together several threatening crosses from the wings, but the hosts cleared away any danger to keep the Terps out of the net. The Dukes would tack on a late goal as time wound down to secure the three-goal victory.

The Terps will return to action on August 24 for their home opener against Appalachian State at Ludwig Field. Kickoff is slated for 7:00 pm.
