2018 Maryland Volleyball Season Preview

QUICK HITS
• Adam Hughes will begin his tenure as the head coach of Maryland volleyball this weekend after being hired on January 23. Hughes has spent the last four years helping to build the program as an assistant coach.
• Last season, Maryland went 18-14 and 7-13 in the Big Ten. The 18 wins were the most for the team since 2010, and seven conference wins were the most for the squad since joining the Big Ten.
• The Terps boast a squad of 15 athletes for the 2018 season, 10 returners and five newcomers. The returners are led by a trio of sophomores: Erika Pritchard, Jada Gardner and redshirt sophomore Katie Myers.
• The Terrapins welcome five new faces to the 2018 team: sophomore transfers Nicole Alford and Hailey Rubino and freshmen Rainelle Jones, Allegra Rivas and Emma Schriner.

ALL ABOUT THAT ACE
• The Terps were especially strong from the service line in 2017. Maryland ranked fourth in the Big Ten with 1.37 aces per set. Sophomore outside hitter Erika Pritchard ranked sixth the conference with 0.42 aces per set. Pritchard has at least one ace in 22 of 32 matches.

WELCOME BACK KATIE
• Redshirt sophomore Katie Myers returns to the starting lineup this season after suffering season ending knee injuries in each of the last two seasons. Myers was granted a sixth year of eligibility by the NCAA this spring, giving her three more seasons in College Park. Myers started in 10 matches at middle blocker as a team captain before injury in 2017, posting 58 kills at a .325 clip, 43 blocks and 20 digs.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS:
• Wake Forest finished the 2017 season at 13-19 (5-14 ACC). Maryland leads the all-time series 25-19, with the two programs meeting annually when the Terps were in the ACC. The Terps and Deacons last met on November 10, 2013 with Maryland winning 3-0.
• UNC Greensboro completed last season with a 19-12 (10-5 SoCon) record. This will be the first meeting between Maryland and UNC Greensboro since 1977, where the Terps defeated the Spartans 3-0.
• Air Force was 14-18 in 2017 (7-11 MWC). This is the first ever meeting between Maryland and Air Force.
