COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Maryland scored four second half goals, led by a two-score performance from senior Jarena Harmon, as the Terrapins took down Iowa 4-0 in their Big Ten opener Friday evening. The Terps' four goals were their most-ever scored in a Big Ten game, while the four-goal margin of victory was also UMD's largest in a B1G game since joining the conference in 2014. Maryland moves to 3-3-3 overall on the year and 1-0 in the B1G, while Iowa drops to 4-3-1 (0-1).
After an evenly matched first half, Maryland came out firing in the second netting four unanswered goals. Harmon started the barrage in the 51st minute, getting a foot on a long arcing cross from Adalee Broadbent in the six-yard box. After the ball bounced over the keeper's head, Harmon was there to poke the ball into the net to notch her third game-winning goal of the year.
The Washington, D.C. native kept it rolling from there, scoring eight minutes later to secure her second multi-goal game of the year. After Hope Lewandoski played in a free kick from the right side, Harmon powered a left-footed strike off a deflection from an Iowa defender to make it 2-0 Terps.
Redshirt junior Darby Moore delivered the most unlikely, yet impressive goal of the evening in the 72nd minute to push the lead to 3-0. The Norfolk, Va. native ripped a ball deep from the right sideline, which sailed high towards the back left corner of the net. The ball snuck in right above the Hawkeye keeper's head, giving Moore her first goal of the season and a commanding 3-0Â lead for Maryland.
Redshirt freshman Alyssa Poarch got in on the action with her first career goal in the 84th minute, after a breakaway led by Loren Sefick developed in Iowa's half. Sefick plaved a through ball right to Poacrh's feet on the left wing, and Poarch finished past the goalie to deliver the nail in the coffin of the 4-0 victory. Â Â Â Â
Rachel Egyed earned her second consecutive shutout in goal for the Terps, and recorded at least seven saves for the fourth straight game.
The Terps return to action this Sunday to host Nebraska at Ludwig Field at 2:00 pm.
