Terps Take Down Rutgers, 2-0

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Sophomore Eric Matzelevich and senior Amar Sejdic tallied in a routine 2-0 win for the Maryland men's soccer team against Rutgers at Yurcak Field Wednesday afternoon.

The Terrapins (3-3-2, 2-1-0 Big Ten) were in control for the majority of proceedings as the host Scarlet Knights sat back and defended. Matzelevich's goal put the Terps at the interval and Sejdic's goal closed out the match late.

"I thought it was a very good response to Friday's game," head coach Sasho Cirovski said. "We took Friday's loss hard. Beginning with Sunday's practice, we started to move forward and I thought we came on the road here and our goal was to get a shutout and a victory, so mission accomplished."

The most even minutes of the game were the opening 15. Rutgers' Brian Hawkins had a golden chance two minutes in, but shot wide. Senior Sebastian Elney may have had a better one in the 12th minute. Junior Johannes Bergmann served a ball in to the six that Elney got his head on, but it was saved by the keeper.

Maryland's opener came in the 14th minute. After a Maryland corner kick was cleared out, junior Eli Crognale floated a ball into the box and Matzelevich's headed flick floated in to the back post. It was the sophomore's first goal of the season.

From the first goal, the Terps continued to pressure. Freshman Justin Gielen had a couple of solid opportunities while Matzelevich and Herve troubled the Rutgers defense in spots. Maryland's backline of Matt Di Rosa, Bergmann, Donovan Pines and Andrew Samuels were rock solid for the majority of the match. Goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair had to make a point blank save early on, but was mostly untroubled throughout.

Sejdic scored his second goal of the season in the 78th minute. Bergmann launched a long ball to William James Herve, who took the ball down the left wing and to the end line before sliding the ball into the path of Sejdic. The senior slotted the ball home from close range to double the lead.

Maryland returns to action Sunday afternoon at Coastal Carolina. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
