Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Terps and No. 7 Virginia Draw at Audi Field

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Despite not allowing a goal for the second-consecutive match, the Maryland men's soccer team (0-1-2, 0-0 B1G) drew the No. 7 Virginia Cavaliers (1-0-1), 0-0, at Audi Field on Monday night.

Maryland goalkeeper Dane St. Clair tallied one save on the night, as the Terrapin backline allowed the Virginia offense to tally one shot on goal in the 110 minutes played.

"Tonight was an absolutely wonderful experience for our players," head coach Sasho Cirovski said. "Many thanks to DC United for facilitating this game for us. This is the greatest rivalry in college soccer and it was essential to me to resuscitate this game in a meaningful way. I have great respect for the University of Virginia and tonight was a good game. It was difficult conditions to play in but I was very proud of the way our team battled and created some chances. But, to see the way DC United create a renaissance and to be able to play in the first collegiate game in this facility is a great privilege and we're very thankful."

The Terps had the first opportunity of the evening, with Sebastian Elney nearly converting off a free kick service from Johannes Bergmann. The sides ended the first half with three shots a piece, but the Maryland offense tallied the only attempt on goal in the opening 45 minutes.

Again, Maryland nearly broke the deadlock in the 66th minute when Eric Matzelevich played a ball to William James Herve, whose shot from inside the box just sailed over the crossbar.

The Terrapins had the majority of the scoring chances during regulation, outshooting Virginia 12-9, which included a 7-1 advantage in shots on goal.

In overtime, Maryland generated the best chance between the two sides just before the final whistle. After Eli Crognale created space inside the box, Justin Gielen's 109th-minute header went over the crossbar to keep the score knotted at zero.

Gielen led the way for the Terrapin offense, finishing the night with four shots. Junior Paul Bin added three as well.

Maryland's season will continue on Friday night when the Terrapins host No. 8 UCLA at Ludwig Field. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m., and will be broadcast live on BTN.
