COLLEGE PARK, Md. — The Maryland men's soccer team (0-2-2, 0-0 B1G) fell to UCLA (3-1-0), 1-0, in a Saturday matinee at Ludwig Field.
It was Maryland's fourth-consecutive match against an opponent receiving votes in the United Soccer Coaches poll.
"I told my players that I believe in them," head coach
Sasho Cirovski said after the match. "We just played four really good teams, and a highly-motivated UCLA team after the results in the past few years. There is no shame in losing to a very good UCLA team, but we're better than that. It's a long season and we now just have to find a way into the back of the net."
After a scoreless opening half, UCLA took the lead with a goal in the 52nd minute. Mohammed Kamara connected on a ball swung in by teammate Erik Holt. It was Kamara's fourth goal of the season.
Redshirt junior goalie
Dayne St. Clair was able to keep the Terps within striking distance, making five saves in the contest. The goal was just the third St. Clair has allowed this season, and the first since the first half of Maryland's season opener at No. 24 Washington. Juniors centerbacks
Donovan Pines and
Johannes Bergmann were both stout defensively more most of the match.
Maryland will be back in action on Monday when it hosts West Virginia at Ludwig Field. The match is set to begin at 7 p.m., and will be streamed live on BTN Plus.
