Terps and Knights Play to 1-1 Draw

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Sophomore Hope Lewandoski scored off a rebound in the 64th minute as the Maryland women's soccer team drew with UCF, 1-1, on Thursday night at Ludwig Field.

The Terrapins (2-3-2, 0-0-0 Big Ten) played a spirited second half and overtime after UCF controlled in the run of play in the opening 45 minutes. Senior goalkeeper Rachel Egyed was excellent between the sticks, tallying eight saves on the night.

After a first 30 minutes that saw them have the majority of possession, UCF got on the board first in the 33rd minute. Zandy Soree played a through ball to the feet of Konya Plummer, who slotted the ball past Egyed. Maryland's best opportunity of the half came late when freshman Loren Sefcik ripped an effort from just outside the box that was saved. The rebound came out to redshirt freshman Alyssa Poarch, but the Delaware native could not put the ball on frame.

Maryland played well in the second half, a stanza that was delayed 35 minutes for lightning with 13:39 to go. Lewandoski's goal came after some good combination play that started with the sophomore, who made a run down the left channel before laying the ball back to Darby Moore. Moore slid the ball through to Poarch, who saw two attempt saved in succession. The second shot found the path of Lewandoski, who had continued her run, and the Ohio native put the ball in the back of the net from close range.

The two teams went back and forth for the remainder of regulation and overtime. Egyed made a number of fantastic stops to keep the match tied, including a fingertip save in overtime. Poarch had a decent chance right before the end of the second overtime period, but her shot was saved.

Maryland's backline was solid after the goal, with Anissa Mose, Adalee Broadbent, Kady Badham and Jenna Surdick all having solid matches.

Maryland returns to action Sunday night when George Washington visits Ludwig Field. Action is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. on BTN Plus.
