Bannister, Hemida Win vs. No. 12 Nebraska

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Redshirt senior Alfred Bannister and senior Youssif Hemida each earned a decision victory, but the Maryland wrestling team fell to No. 12 Nebraska, 37-6, on Friday.

Both Bannister and Hemida tallied their third dual wins of the year, good for the most on Maryland's roster. Hemida's win was his third conference victory in as many appearances, which is the most on the team.

Nebraska got off to a fast start with a trio of wins to open the match. No. 13 Zeke Moisey topped Maryland's Brandon Cray by major decision, which was then followed by a pair of wins from 133-pounder Jevon Parrish and 141-pounder Chad Red Jr. Freshman Orion Anderson wrestled well for the Terps at 133, but fell to Parrish by decision.

Bannister then got the Terrapins on the board with his 5-3 win at 149. The La Plata, Maryland-native took an early lead with a double-leg takedown in the first period. Jordan Shearer cut the lead in half with an escape to end the period, and then tied the score with another escape to start the second frame.

Maryland's redshirt senior regained the lead with an escape of his own to start the third, and then secured the decision victory with a takedown in the final minute of the bout.

157-pounder Adam Whitesell then electrified the crowd in the opening minute of his match against No. 2 Tyler Berger. Whitesell secured a pair of takedowns in the first 30 seconds to take an early lead, rising the crowd at the XFINITY Center Pavilion to its feet.

Berger was able to weather the storm, though, and flipped Whitesell on his back to end the match with a pin.

Redshirt freshman Philip Spadafora impressed coming out of intermission as he took on No. 6 Isaiah White in the 165-pound match. White took the lead early in the bout, but Spadafora locked up a cradle to cut the deficit to just one point after a pair of periods.

White was able to extend the lead once again to open the third, but Spadafora brought it back within one with a takedown off a counter-attack. White, though, was able to hold off Spadafora the rest of the way, taking the match by decision.

The Huskers then extended the lead with a trio of victories, but Hemida closed out the night with a victory for the Terps.

No. 14 David Jensen secured the first points of the bout with a takedown in the first period. Hemida was able to escape near the end of the frame to cut the deficit in half, but Jensen brought it back to a two-point advantage to begin the second period.

Hemida rallied from there, earning a pair of takedowns to take a 5-4 lead halfway through the second period. Jensen then brought the match level with a short-time escape, and the two moved into the final period tied up at five.

Hemida struck first in the third, escaping to begin the period and taking a 6-5 lead. He then put the match away with a late takedown, taking Jensen down just moments after Jensen appeared to get in on Hemida's leg. Hemida finished off Nebraska's heavyweight, taking the bout, 8-6.

Hemida's win was his first triumph over a ranked opponent this season, previously knocking off Jacob Aven (Purdue) and Fletcher Miller (Indiana) by decision in his return to dual action last weekend.

Maryland (0-6, 0-3 B1G) will be back in dual action on Sunday, Jan. 27, hosting Michigan State at the XFINITY Center Pavilion. The match is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
