COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Sophomore forward Bruno Fernando has been named one of 15 players on the Naismith Defensive Player of the Year midseason watch list, announced Tuesday by the Atlanta Tipoff Club.
 
Fernando has been dominant on the defensive end for the No. 13 Maryland men's basketball team, ranking second in the Big Ten Conference in blocks/g (2.2), rebounds/g (10.4) and double-doubles (11).
 
The Luanda, Angola, native has been particularly effective on the glass in conference action, averaging 12.0 rebounds over the course of nine games.
 
Last week, Fernando was named both Oscar Roberston National Player of the Week and Big Ten Player of the Week for his efforts in a pair of Maryland wins over Indiana and Wisconsin.
 
Fernando and the Terps return to action Saturday when they face Illinois at Madison Square Garden at noon. The game will be televised on Big Ten Network.
