Throughout the fall, umterps.com will be featuring a different men's basketball player (or players) each week leading up the start of the 2019-20 campaign. Be sure to follow along with additional player-specific content on Maryland basketball's social media platforms on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram for more on each player. Today's featured player is Makhi Mitchell from Washington, D.C.. Here's five burning questions with Makhi.Â
What's it like to play with your twin brother, Makhel, at the college level?
"Its a blessing. Not many make it out of where I'm from in the southeast part of D.C., so I'm just blessed for this opportunity and I'm really excited to be here. Me and my twin obviously have a connection on the court. We need to play for one another and play for the team.
More importantly, how is your mother handling you being away from home?
"Our Mom is handling us being away pretty good. She texts every now and then and I call her everyday. Almost every Sunday I try to call her and FaceTime her. My little sister and my older brothers and stuff like that, just checking in basically. We are not too far away."
Â
What's it like to have the chance to play for Maryland so close to home?
"It's a lot on my shoulders and a lot on my brother's shoulders. A lot of people are expecting a lot from us and we are just ready to deliver. I'm excited for the season and I'm excited for whats to come in the future in the four years that we are here. I'm just excited."
Â
Describe your playing style.
"I do pretty much everything. I can bring the ball up when I need to, score, defend, block shots and just provide that extra push for the team. Being in college has made me realize how much harder I have to work. But I'm good at just pushing that pace and always playing with intensity and competing and talking trash. I love talking trash, I feel like that makes the game so much better."
Â
Which older player has most impressed you?
"EA (
Eric Ayala). I like the way he plays. He sees everything. He can pass or get the shot off whether its coming off the screen or driving through the lane. He just impacts the defense and causes them to collapse. He can just find that extra guy and just provide for the team."
